Is Your Baby Bedding Set Fatal?

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Over 6000 cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are reported each year, and more than 900 of these are due to babies’ soft nursery bedding. Which brings up the question of safety for your infants mattress.

There is a risk of the infant suffocating if soft bedding is used. Especially if the head sinks into the bedding. You may think a soft mattress is more comfortable for your little one, but if it is too soft, it may not be safe. To avoid fatal accidents when the baby is sleeping, there should be someone always nearby to keep an eye on the position of the baby’s head. When the baby’s head is placed on the soft mattress, they may not have enough strength to come back in a good position.

Is your precious one sleeping on a safe baby bedding?

Reports have shown that there are more than 6000 babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) each year and out of these cases, more than 900 cases are due to babies sleeping on soft baby nursery bedding. Therefore the question, is your nursery bedding safe for your child to sleep in?

Soft baby nursery bedding can cause an infant to suffocate when the baby is being placed on her belly and her head sinks into the soft mattress. Soft mattresses may be nice for babies to sleep in, but on the other hand, they might be dangerous too.As infants are too weak, when their heads are being placed on the soft mattress, they might not have the ability to turn around and recover from such a dangerous position. Disastrous accidents might happen if no one is around to take care of the baby.

Ways to help your infant sleep through the night

Premature infants with immature brains and reflex systems are at high risk for central sleep apnea syndrome, even if these babies are otherwise healthy. Fortunately, those premature babies who have the syndrome will generally outgrow it as they mature, providing they receive careful enough monitoring and supportive care during infancy to survive. Because of the propensity toward apnea, medications that can cause respiratory drive depression are either not given to premature infants, or given under careful monitoring, with equipment for resuscitation immediately available. Such precautions are routinely taken for premature infants after general anesthesia. Caffeine has been found to help reduce apnea in preterm infants and to aid in care after general anesthesia.
