Dog-Daycare?
Thursday, February 5th, 2009I am curious to see what everyone’s opinions on dog daycare is.
Who’s for dog daycare-thinks it’s a wonderful thing. Does anyone take their dog to daycare? Is anyone against dog daycares?
Here’s my opinion:
I currently work at a daycare/boarding/training facility, and despite that I love my job and love every dog that comes in as if it were my own, I am very picky about it. I see tons of wonderful dogs that come in, day by day, which over time develop horrible behavioural problems from the unnatural pack that daycare creates. I will bring my dogs in every once in a while when I am working, but since I, their owner, am there, I can avoid letting them pick up on bad habits. I also see so many illness transferred from dog to dog-giardia, fleas, etc. We do require that every dog is up to date with all their shots, but when it comes to parasites, and strands of illnesses which are not prevented by shots, they are transferred quickly. (Will add more details in a moment)
However, I see it work wonders for dogs with issues such as separation anxiety, who cannot be left at home alone. I also think it is good socialization and exercise.
I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on this matter.

We require all of our dogs to have “trial days” meaning they have to schedule a day to come in, and are slowly introduced to our “pack”. Depending on how the dog does, it is either accepted or denied. We’ve had a few spats, but nothing serious as we are aware of the signs of aggression and are on top of behaviour which may escalate into something bad. If a dog causes a fight, it may get a second chance depending on what the situation was, but is usually “expelled” from the daycare. It is an all-breed free for all and we will give any dog a chance, it just depends on that dog’s temperament.
I agree with you that there needs to be a filtration system that allows only dog-friendly-dogs to come into daycare.
