Any parent should know that good quality baby sleep is essential for a child’s future health and development.  When a parent see their baby sleep, they feel great pleasure but when the baby is crying because she can’t sleep is torture.

A very important step in solving a baby’s sleep problem is to teach them to get into a regular, fuss-free, sleep routine.

If you haven’t established some sort of bedtime routine for your baby, you should seriously start considering doing that.  Once you have established a sleep pattern, your baby will be happier, more content and probably sleep right through the night.

You could start a sleep routine with a bath.  You follow it by the dimming of the lights so that your baby realise it is getting near sleep time.  You can then change your baby’s nappy or diaper and put her in the crib.  You can finish off with a bedtime story or maybe lullaby.  Remember that even adults have a wind down routine before they go to bed, so why should it be any different for your baby?

You don’t need to follow the above routine to the letter, you may wish to do it in a different order, or have a different routine entirely, but the important thing is that you create a baby sleep routine that you follow night after night after night until it becomes a habit for your child.

As soon as you start your routine, your baby will realise that he is expected to sleep soon.  Babies and infants are creatures of habit.  When you start a predictable routine like this it will help to settle your baby more quickly.  It will also increase the chances of her sleeping through the night.  Your baby will be settled by the time they must sleep.

When you provide a routine as well as the same sleep environment each time, your baby will have more restfull sleep through the night.

Remember that you should start your baby’s bedtime routine in her early weeks of life.  It is crucial that you start earlier rather that later, but if your baby is older, you should start to get her into a bedtime routine as soon as possible.

If your baby is still having a baby sleep problem after you have created a bedtime routine, you have to look if you can imporove on that bedtime routine. It might just be a routine that your baby doesn’t like or something in the routine she doesn’t like. It might also be that you are not consistent enough with the bedtime routine and you should have a look at being more consistent.

You should also create a daily naptime routine too when it is feasible to do so as this helps night time sleep very much.
