Newborns Need Natural Skin Care

There are many skin care products that are being marketed as essential for your newborn. However, you might be surprised to learn that many doctors think these baby skin care products might actually be detrimental to your newborn. The reason for this is the chemical ingredients they often contain.

It’s important that you keep chemicals away from your baby for as long as you can. Don’t interfere with the natural growth of your baby’s skin. Allergies, eczema, and other irritations are less likely to occur this way.

Babies only require the basics of skin care. So keep away from any and all chemical laden products in your baby’s first month. In fact, when bathing your baby in the first month you should only use water and a soft cloth. You can comb thick hair with a baby comb to get it clean during bath time.

Nature Knows Best

Natural is the best way to go when approaching baby skin care. To follow a natural skin care routine, leave your baby’s skin untreated as much as you can.

After your baby’s birth, you might see a white, sticky coating on your baby’s skin. Don’t remove it, because it’s a natural skin moisturizer. Allow it to be absorbed into the skin naturally.

If your baby is premature then it is even more important that you hold back on using any baby care products. This is because a premature baby’s skin is even more delicate than other babies. The best time to start skin care for your premature baby is after the exact due date of your baby.

Keeping the Cord Clean

Before your baby’s cord falls out you need to make sure that the area remains clean and dry. There is no need to use any powders or lotions on it. If the area gets dirty simply use a soft cloth and water to wipe it clean before patting dry.

If your baby is premature or sick then the skin care routine you should follow for keeping the cord clean may be different. You may need to use antiseptic wipes in the area to help prevent infection. Ask your doctor for advice when it comes to skin care for your premature or sick baby.

Don’t use baby wipes until your baby is at least one month of age. Make sure that the baby wipes you use are free of alcohol and fragrances. They should be as mild as possible. Moisturizers containing emollients are the best choice for a newborn.
