So you’ve bought the crib – congratulations! But now you must be wondering what bedding you’re going to put in it. A large number of bedding sets will include many different items, but you might find that you don’t really need them all. The most up-to-date recommendation for crib bedding is to use sheets only, and keep other bedding out. Leaks will happen, of course, so buy a few extra crib sheets. It’s better to spend your money on a few really good, durable, and comfortable crib sheets than on accessories you don’t even need.

Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Babies don’t need to be any warmer than their parents, but in the winter it’s usually not practical to leave a baby without a blanket. The solution is to use a wearable blanket or even really warm PJs instead. Wearable blankets are sort of like a cross between clothing and a sleeping bag. If you interested in a swaddling blanket, you might want to investigate some of the more modern styles that aid in getting the right fit. Swaddling can be an excellent way to help a newborn sleep, but it is generally not recommended beyond 6 weeks because of fears it can hinder hip development. A comforter can still be a good idea to keep on hand for wrapping your baby while you’re holding them. You’ll be fine as long as you remember not to leave the blanket in the crib with the baby.

You might be considering a sleep wedge for your baby. After all, it’s supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS, something most new parents worry about. But young babies are not able to roll over, so if you put them to bed on their backs, they’ll stay on their backs. And by the time they are able to roll onto their tummies, SIDS is no longer such a serious concern. You should also realize that these foam wedges are themselves soft bedding, which is not recommended by most pediatricians for very young babies.

Bedding sets are more than just quilts and bumper pads, though. They often include things like wall hangings, window valances, and even a mobile. While these add tremendously to the look of the nursery, they are quite honestly not needed.

But if you do want a bedding set, it’s much more affordable to buy a neutral crib set like a Hot Cocoa baby crib bedding set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
