Caution Pays: Locating the Perfect Nursery Bedding
If you’re a new parent, chances are you’re getting completely overwhelmed by the vast range of styles available for baby bedding and nursery decor. If you’re looking for an animal design, you can find just about anything you can imagine, from caterpillar crib bedding to elephants. Or maybe you’re looking for angels? There are well over a hundred unique options. And if you want nursery rhymes or cartoon characters, put aside a couple of weeks just to browse!
Whether it’s baby boy crib bedding or baby girl, it can be really difficult to stick within your budget, because everything is so sweet. To be a bit blunt, that designer bedding set you paid $1000 for is going to go through the same spitup and diaper leaks as a $200 set. Here are some things that your baby actually will care about:
– If you are considering crib bumpers, be aware that they have certain risks associated with them. Bumper pads are designed to prevent your baby’s head from bumping up against the crib’s railings, but they also pose a potential suffocation risk. If you decide to put crib bumpers in, be sure that they are properly secured and that any ties are on the outside of the railings. But the far better option is to just remove the pads completely, at least until the end of year one.
– You’ll soon find out that when people talk about crib sheets, they’re referring to the fitted sheet only. That’s because flat sheets and pillowcases are usually not available for cribs. Not all crib sheets fit all mattresses, and the wrong sized sheet can pop off the mattress and cause safety risks. Diaper leaks are inevitable so consider a mattress protector and avoid white sheets!
– Don’t overheat your baby with too many clothes and blankets. She only needs as much bundling as you do. If it’s winter and she really needs extra coverage, use a wearable blanket instead of a loose one. Pillows are a suffocation risk and babies actually sleep better without them, so keep them out of the crib.
When you’re evaluating crib bedding, get something safe. With the number of choices available, you’ll be able to find a bedding set that’s both safe and cute.
