Once Children stop being afraid of the dark, it seems you can’t get them in at night as they want to continue playing. It must seem like a whole new world to discover to new eyes, and in reality it is. All sorts of nocturnal animals come out at night to do their thing, which sometime includes things like tipping the trash can up and eating all the leftovers !). However the main drawback of playing at night and in the dark is that the eyes aren’t up to it. We have very limited vision in the dark, which obviously hinders night time play quite dramatically. Well now that could all be a thing of the past with the new Stealth goggles and binoculars.

Stealth goggles, referred to as version 1 and stealth binoculars, known as version 2 go by the name EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles and are made by Jakks. They are designed for kids 8 years and over for the purpose of playing various games at night.

They use the same technology as the proper night vision gear you might expect the military to use – namely infrared frequency light to illuminate the night. This produces a fairly good picture of what is going on around you, in green or black and white images.

The goggles are referred to as stealth because there are two modes. The first mode is the stealth mode that allows totally covert operations. This means the goggles are totally undetectable – no visible light or sound whatsoever.

The 2nd mode, called the surveillance mode, affords a longer range, (apparently 50 feet at the upper limits) but it gives off a red light. If you are well concealed this might not be noticeable but it is obviously not as stealthy as the first mode.

Version 1 is a genuine set of full face goggles with rubber straps attaching to the back. They can fit snuggly to the face ensuring comfort even when wearing them for a fairly long period of time. The goggles are made of a soft rubber that will adapt to the contour of the wearers face such that no light may get out. There are also caps on the eyeholes so that you can flip them up or down based on if you want to use the infrared vision or your normal eyes. This means you don’t have to remove the goggles unless you really want to.

The binoculars afford more flexibility so that you can switch between infrared vision and normal night time vision just by dropping the binoculars, but this pre-supposes that you use your hands to operate them. This could cause people to lose interest in the binoculars if they need hands free night vision abilities.

Both items will be a cherished gift at Christmas, especially to young boys, but they are not really designed to be used while running, jumping etc. so pre-warn your kids. If goggles don’t sound like you, then how about some night vision Binoculars instead.
